Companies that use chemicals will inevitably encounter liquid chemical splashes. Here we provide a set of solutions for quick response when chemical splashes occur.
1. Before a spill occurs
1) An emergency plan should be developed. Being prepared in advance is of great importance. Proper advance planning is a smart and simple way to help reduce the risk of worker injury and minimize potential harm to the environment.
2) Planning
a. Conduct an inventory of all liquids on site.
b. Create a list of the quantities of each liquid in each location.
c. Identify “high-risk” or “leak-prone” areas.
d. Record the maximum quantity of liquid that could potentially leak in each area (worst-case scenario).
e. Keep material safety data for all liquids in each area up to date.
f. Select the correct kit and cleaning accessories based on the type of liquid in each area.
g. Develop the best routes to reach each location, including all determining factors such as weather.
h. Monitor the kit and related components to ensure they are adequately maintained. Note: If the spill kit is stored outdoors, regularly check the condition of the container and its contents. Cover the kit and place it in a location not exposed to ultraviolet rays to extend the service life of the kit and its contents.
3) Training
a. Use classroom training sessions to establish a command and independent response chain.
b. Simulate spills to practice techniques and reinforce classroom training.
c. Review each simulated spill for potential hazards and areas for improvement.
d. Conduct drills as often as possible to achieve optimal emergency response readiness.
2. When a spill occurs
1) Assess the risk
Evacuate non-essential personnel. If possible, observe the spill and identify the chemical substance involved. Always prioritize safety first.
2) Select Personal Protective Equipment
Choose the correct protective clothing and equipment to safely respond to this spill. If the leaked liquid is unknown, consider the worst-case scenario.
3) Contain, divert, or stop the leak
Use absorbent pads to stop the flow of chemical liquid before it spreads.
4) Stop the leak
If possible, stop the source of the leaked liquid. This could be as simple as closing a valve or righting a fallen drum.
5) Assess the incident response
Once the leaked liquid is contained, reassess the situation and develop a cleanup action plan.
6) Implement the cleanup action plan
Use absorbent sheets or pillows to clean up the contained chemical liquid. Properly dispose of all contaminated materials.
7) Clean up
Clean the site, personnel, and equipment.
8) Complete the final report
Complete all notifications related to the spill, medical exposure reports, and all paperwork.
Basic spill control techniques

Use strip absorbent pads to form a large circle to contain the liquid and reduce the spill area. Overlap the joints to enhance the barrier effect.

Place pillow absorbent pads directly in larger spills to absorb liquid and help with quick cleanup.

For small spills, place sheet absorbent pads directly on the liquid. The spilled liquid will be absorbed faster, easier, and safer.

Oil-only absorbent strips that do not absorb rainwater. Place them around the spill area to prevent oil from entering drains and water sources.
